Recreational Soccer:

The North Scottsdale Soccer Club Recreational season for Fall 2011 was a resounding success!  296 players participated in co-ed divisions ranging from U4/U5 through U10/U13, the largest group ever for NSSC!  Volunteer Coaches did an outstanding job, working with our Players during practices and weekly games, and an atmosphere of friendly competition prevailed.  The feedback received from Parents was overwhelmingly positive, with many families planning to return for our Spring 2012 season.

NSSC looks forward to continuing this outstanding program, and to welcoming all new and current Players!

Competitive Soccer:

Happy new year to all competitive players and parents. This year saw an enormous growth in our competitive teams and I want to recognize Coach Mate and Coach Igor in their efforts to grow the competitive program.

I hope that everyone has enjoyed the first season and are enjoying the second season. I also hope that you have seen improvement and progress over the course of time, both at the individual as well as team levels. Over the next few weeks your player(s) will receive an evaluation or progress report from their Coaches. This will cover strengths, as well as areas of opportunity for improvement and some suggestions on ways to improve outside of practice. You will also have the opportunity to schedule time with your Coach to review the evaluation.

Additionally, we will request all of your to complete assessments of the Coaches. Your candid feedback will help us to improve the competitive program overall, as well as provide useful feedback for each Coach to improve as well.

Thanks you and see you on the fields!

Luis Eguia

Director of Competitive NSSC

Upcoming Soccer Events:

The U.S. Men's National Team is having a public training session on Jan. 20 at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Admission to the training session and parking is free, and will be held from 5-6 p.m. on the stadium field. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m.

During the training session, the team will go through a full series of exercises in final preparation for their match the next day against Venezuela.

It will be a fun and educational experience for soccer players, coaches, and fans to watch how the best players from the United States train and prepare for international competition.

Soccer tip of the day:

Understand what offside means

The reasoning behind the offside rule remains fairly much the same as when it was introduced, namely, it is aimed at preventing an attacking player from waiting for the ball close to the goal. In simple terms, being offside occurs when an attacking player goes behind the line of defenders before the ball has been kicked to them. In greater detail, being offside occurs when:

  • the attacking player is in the opponent's half of the field
  • the attacking player is closer to the goal line than the last defending player (not including the goalie) and the ball.
  • the attacking player is involved in the play, either by playing the ball or interfering with a defender or goalkeeper
  • When an offside infraction is called, play is stopped and an indirect free kick (the ball must touch another player before a goal is scored) is awarded to the opposing team.
